The Dalitso Project
Malawi is a country of 'wannabe' entrepreneurs and for many of our children running a business is an exciting prospect for their future. If done well it will be able to provide for families and contribute to developing Malawi's potential.
However, ensuring a new business is effective, efficient and sustainable is difficult. We want our children to thrive and so felt we required an avenue that would allow for the training of our young people in this area.
It was with this in mind that we decided to rent a shop in the Thyolo market and set up a Wedding Dress Hire shop. Here some of our older girls, that will not go on to further education, will be employed in the shop and given the opportunity to develop skills for business. This will allow them to learn to write realistic business plans and to see these in action, in turn, allowing them to more effectively contribute to society on leaving the programme.
The Wedding Dress Shop idea is a simple one. We provide affordable hire of wedding dresses to upcoming brides. These dresses have been donated in Scotland and sent in the container. It is hoped this service will relieve the pressure on couples to purchase dresses that put stress on families budgets but still allow them to have a special day.
